A homeowner reached out to us and inquired about reducing their electric bill. The asked us if we do free attic inspections, and the answer is always, yes. That week I header out to the home with my thermal equipment, ladder, headlight and mask and walk the entire attic system.

During the inspection we noticed that the R19 batting was over 35 years old and they has another layer of attic insulation on top of that. My guess is that they were trying to keep the power bills low. The insulation was somewhat “okay”, but we noticed several other things that were needing attention.

Our conclusion after inspection:

  1. The home had R19 and a small layer of blown loosefill.
  2. The entire home was not air sealed.
  3. The batting had a previous rodent issue
  4. The baffles were not sufficient for proper air flow.

Location: Orlando, Florida

Concern: $900-$1100 monthly electric bill.

Cause: Old attic insulation, metal roof.

Correction: We did a full attic insulation removal, sanitize and are prepping for spray foam.

Not all attic insulation inspections are the same, and not all homes are similar. When we go into a home for an attic insulation inspection, we sometimes go into the home thinking we know what the exact problem is, usually low attic insulation. But that is not always the case. For this home, they had a few deficiencies that we needed to resolve first in order for us to prep for spray foam.
