What are knee walls, or sometimes referenced as stem walls. These are walls that are generally above the 8′ or 10′ wall living space and extended into the attic, and are insulated.
Florida code states that knee walls have to be insulated to an R13 value, and this is a minimum. Hitting a minimum is good, but insulating higher than code is always best in this situation. When we have the opportunity, we always aim for R19, and if possible, R30.
The higher the R-Value, the less heat you will have in your living space. We see the same situation with attic insulation. Florida code states a minimum of R30, but we always go for an R38, over time, this will save you or the homeowner money when it comes to electric.
