This week we had a homeowner in Winter Park, Florida reach out to us because their home would never cool below 78F, even with a new AC unit. Simple, right? Yes!
Usually the problem is 2 things.
- Lack of insulation.
- HVAC unit not cooling properly.
Well, they have a new AC unit and the unit is pushing out 58F out of all the ducts. So we FLIR’d the ceiling and the flat ceiling at 1″ of fiberglass. The problem with having 1″ of insulation, is that the home is allowing a tremendous amount of heat to get into the home from the roof and the home is not efficient. It is nearly impossible to beat the heat with more AC and their power bill in high.
A home of this age will need as much attic insulation as possible to be added to flat roof attic system by means of dense packing.
Our conclusion after inspection:
- 100% of the home had 1″ of attic insulation.
- The HVAC is working as designed.
- The ceiling is reading 84F – 104F and needs attic insulation.
Location: Winter Park, Florida
Concern: AC is not cooling the home.
Cause: Lack of insulation.
Correction: Cut access holes in the flat roof of the home to blow in insulation.
