A homeowner reached out to us a few weeks ago and expressed a concern that they had regarding their water pipes in the attic. After the home was repiped with PEX piping, cold water was always hot in the day, and the hot water was not as hot in the cooler months. We tested the cold water at 2pm, and the cold water tested at 94F. Warm for “cold” water.
Whenever a repipe is completed in an home, 95% of the time the new PEX pipes or CPVC pipes are run in the attic. This is 100% fine, its faster, its cheaper and preserves most of the wall in the home.
For this customer, we insulated 100% of the 3/4″ main pipes, and 1/2″ spur pipes that run the bathrooms and kitchen.
Location: Orlando, Florida
Concern: After a repipe, the cold water was always warm and the hot water was always cooler in the winter.
Cause: Uninsulated water pipes.
Correction: We added an R3.3 pipe insulation to all the water pipes in the attic.
When insulating water pipes in the attic, we typically see a 6F-8F increase in hot water temperature are the far end of a home, and a 10F-15F decrease in temperatures in cold water pipes during the summer.
If you are experiencing these issues after your repipe, call Dennis at 407-775-2230 and we can provide an on-site estimate for a re-pipe.
