In most of Florida, an well-insulated attic needs a minimum of an R30 rated r-value. Most of our attics that we insulate are blown in using Owens Corning ProPink L77a.
This week we had a customer that wanted for us install a fiberglass batting material, as opposed to a blown loose-fill material. In order for us to install the batt, we had to first remove all the old blown attic insulation.
There are a few reasons to install batt, over blown insulation.
- Batting can easily be lifted up and moved around for future electrical work.
- Batting can easily be replaced if needed in the future.
- Batting is easily cut and fit into tight spaces or vertical wall or attic knee wall.
Although batting is more expensive, and sometimes does not prevent thermal bridging. Batting is a good alternative to blown insulation.
Thermal bridging occurs when for example an exposed truss is not covered by insulation transfers heat into a conditioned space. This is one of the benefits of using blown attic insulation, as blown attic insulation covered 100% of the trusses and crevices that prevents thermal bridging.
