It’s a tricky answer to figure out on your own because insulation products vary in their efficiency and R-value performance. Complicating matters even more, insulation performance can also be affected by factors like improper installation, insulation damage, or settling that occurs naturally over time.

A good place to start when determining how much insulation your attic needs is the U.S. Department of Energy’s recommended insulation levels. This is based on local energy costs and climate conditions. Central Florida is considered a Zone 2 climate and the minimum recommended insulation for an uninsulated attic in our area is an R-value is 30.

Understanding R-Values

Insulation always carried an R-value. “R” means resistance to heat flow. Higher values provide more resistance and greater insulation performance than lower values, but you can overdo it. Too much insulation can be just as problematic as it prevents home from “breathing” and may restrict airflow throughout the home. Deciding how much insulation to install and what R-value to purchase is a balancing game between your home’s energy costs, how much existing insulation you have, what type it is, how old it is and what shape it is in, and the size and design of your home. All of this is considered in relation to your climate and your current home performance.

Minimum Insulation Requirements in Central Florida

R30 is the minimum level of insulation required by code for Central Florida attics. That is about 10.5 inches of insulation. However, that is just the minimum recommendations. The Department of Energy recommends between R30 and R60 levels in Florida, depending on the home’s needs.

Find Out How Much Insulation You Need

You can do a quick check of your attic insulation to see if you need more by measuring its thickness. If you have less than 6 or 7 inches of insulation, your home will benefit from additional insulation.

The best way to determine how much insulation your home needs is to take advantage of our free inspection! Florida Attic Insulation Pros will inspect your current insulation situation, take measurements, discuss whatever issues you have noticed (warm rooms, a/c runs too much, higher electricity consumption than normal, etc.), and explain what solutions are available to help you fix the issues.

We install Owens Corning ProPink L77a loose-fill insulation which provides R38 performance at 14 inches. It is the ideal solution for most of our customers providing just the right balance between insulation levels, home comfort and performance, and cost. ProPink loose-fill can be added on top of existing undamaged insulation or installed in a bare attic. If you need additional insulation beyond R38 value we can help with that too. It is a truly outstanding product.
