When it comes to home insulation, attic insulation is the most important, followed next by wall insulation. Insulation of attic, walls, crawlspace (if applicable) and air sealing are some of the fundamentals when it comes to home energy efficiency.

In a typical year, we are presented with the opportunity to insulate CMU, or concrete block walls during a renovation several times a month. When the old drywall is off, this is a great time to add more R-Value to the walls.

Depending on the home build and budget, we typically recommend performing 3 services to concrete walls for maximum energy efficiency.

    1. Air Sealing – We always recommend air sealing around electrical boxes, wire and water penetrations and doors and windows. This will help reduce any draft in and out of the home.
    2. Foam Injection – This is a fun process where we inject a slow expanding foam into the concrete blocks to add about an R9 to R11 insulation value.
    3. AA2 Fi-Foil – The last step is to add a radiant barrier fi-foil that will add a R4.1 r-value to all the walls.
