This week we had a homeowner contact us because they stated the bedrooms felt very cold during the recent cold front. The homeowner also stated that during the summer, the rooms also feel very warm.
As I am writing this, we have another cold front coming through. This Saturday, the Orlando area temperatures will drop to about 27F-29F. Usually cold for Central Florida.
Generally if you have cold bedrooms during our Florida Winter and warm to hot bedrooms during the summer, lack of insulation is generally the problem.
In Florida we always want to achieve an R38, which when using Owens Corning ProPinkL77a, it measures at 13.5″. Attic insulation is needed in the summer to keep the air conditioned air cool in your home. Inversely, during these short cold fronts, proper insulation will help keep the cold from dropping into your home and keeping your home warm.
Our conclusion after inspection:
- We found that the back bedrooms had only 4″ of attic insulation.
- We found that the living room had 5″ of attic insulation.
- We found that the kitchen and front room only had 2″ of attic insulation.
Location: Orlando, Florida
Concern: Cold bedrooms during the winter.
Cause: Attic insulation is below code.
Correction: We added 8″ and 12″ of attic insulation to the entire home to achieve R38.
