A homeowner that we have been working with for nearly 2 years is ready improve her exterior wall insulation on her home. The problem with the exterior wall is that their is sparse insulation in the wall, and this is leading to a lot of heat and humidity issues along the southern facing side. Without proper insulation, the home is more humid and the temperature fluctuates more than it would normally on a properly insulated home.
Here is a little back story with the home. For the past 2 years, we have worked with her on the home and improved the following in her home, this has been a progressive project and everything we do helps improve the overall efficiency.
In July of 2024, we completed a full attic air seal seal, duct sealing and added R28 for a final R-38 using Owens Corning ProPinkL77a.
We were able to improve the home energy efficiency and reduced the humidity by about 10%. However, the humidity was still about 5-10% more than it should have been. After further evaluation, we discovered that the home is a wood frame home, and after sample core drilling, discovered that about 25% of the exterior had R11 batting. So an incredible 75% of the exterior has no insulation.
Location: Apopka, Florida
Concern: Wants a further reduction in humidity and a further reduction in electric bills.
Cause: Exterior wall insulation is insufficient.
Correction: Our customer hired a crew to remove all the exterior siding, the remaining wall insulation and we sprayed in an open cell foam rated at R13. The R13 open cell on paper is only a R2 more than the R11, however, the R13 foam completely encapsulates the wall to provide a 100% air seal.
