A client called us and wanted to add more insulation to their home. The customer stated they had a very high electric bill in the summer and some rooms had high humidity during the day.
Upon inspection, we discovered the home had good insulation, not perfect but enough. One of the problems they had was that they home was a 1980’s build and the home already had a dozen recessed lights, was repiped, had 20 year old HVAC ducts and the home was very drafty.
Location:
Orlando, Florida
Concern:
Drafty home, high humidity and high summer time electric bills.
Cause:
The home was not properly air sealed and the gaps in the recessed lights, around the AC duct boots and all the top plates had gaps. These gaps allowed the exchanged hot attic air in the home and cool home air into the attic.
Correction:
- We removed all the attic insulation to allow 100% access to the attic.
- Air sealed all the top plates in the attic.
- Air sealed all the plumbing holes into the walls.
- Air sealed all the electrical outlets and holes into the home.
Note: These pictures represent less than 5% of the air sealing with did with the home, just too many photos to post. This home took 4 of us and the use of 7 cans of Soudal foam and half-gallon of HVAC mastic to properly air seal the home.
